Call of Cthulhu (Video Game, 2017)

“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” – H.P. Lovecraft.

I am a mere sacricolist at the altar of Lovecraft. His work has inspired my own short story series, as well as many of my other works. And I know that I am not alone in this. In fact, Lovecraft has inspired us more than any purely magazine printed author of all time.

Naturally, his work has influenced film, music and video games. Now the latter of these have given us a few good scares over the years, but as of December 2017, those scares are likely to become soul destroying as Call of Cthulhu comes to consume us all.

The game takes place in the 1920’s in Massachusetts, where the player takes the role of Edward Pierce (private investigator) who, while conducting a routine investigation upon the mysterious Darkwater Island, discovers that the Great Old One, Cthulhu is soon to return to the surface world in order to obliterate all life, as is his eternal want. (What you are supposed to do about it? Who knows? -Ed.)

Amazingly spooky.

The game will take place upon a semi-open world and will combine various elements of horror, science fiction, psychological horror, mystery and stealth to create a world that promises to be rich, diverse and absolutely terrifying.

FUN FACT: The game will be closely based upon the 1981 pen-and-paper RPG of the same name. (Pen and paper gaming. It is, as they say, “the school of the old.” -Ed)

Now we have a few months to go until we get to play this appetite whetting game. So in the mean time, I suggest you read the Cthulhu Mythos or listen to the excellent radio dramas produced by the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society. (I can only hope that my own scrawl one day inspires an Historical Society to produce aNax’uL Legacy tales.)

“The world is indeed comic, but the joke is on mankind.” – H.P. Lovecraft.
