ZASCHITNIKI “GUARDIANS” – Upcoming Russian Superhero Movie

We have become so accustomed to superhero’s appearing on the big screen (particularly the Marvel variety) that they no longer seem exciting anymore due to the same formula that they use in their movies. Perhaps this is the beginning of the decline in the comic book movie genre…but, let us not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Let us take the example of this promising movie hailing all the way from Russia. Directed by Armenian director Sarik Andreasyan , “Zaschitniki” or “Guardians” tells the tale of a team of heroes created during the Cold War and imbued with extraordinary powers that allow them to perform incredible feats in the event of an attack by supernatural threats upon Russia. Years pass […]

Alan Rickman – The actor, the voice, the hero

We have lost many cult heroes in January. David Bowie, known for his unique sense of fashion, his movie roles like the Goblin King in Labyrinth and also his hit songs like “Space Oddity” and “Let’s Dance” died after an 18-month battle with cancer on January 10th. Glenn Frey from the band The Eagles who co-wrote the cult favourite song, Hotel California with Don Henley passé away on January 18th. Another legend, Alan Rickman, died on January 14. He died of pancreatic cancer. January is a sad month for those that followed the careers of these legends. But today we celebrate Alan Rickman. He died of cancer at age 69, after quite an impressive career. Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman, born […]

Ash vs evil dead

I adore the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise. I love Ash. He’s amazingly entertaining. And the Deadites are such an entertaining bag of undead crazies. For those that do not know, the Evil Dead franchise is one of the most influential pop-culture film series in history. Before the ‘Supernatural Bromance’ we had Ash, and the deadites. So you can imagine how excited I was when I discovered they were not only making an Evil Dead TV series, but that it was not a reboot, and that Ash would be in it in all his Bruce Campbell like glory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unnLg1TPCYM The series takes place some three decades after Ash returns to Earth. (American ending of Army of Darkness). Obviously, Ash is working in […]

The Brink

America and Pakistan stand on the edge of destruction. The rest of the world has joined them on the precipice. Obviously there is only one man for the job, Jack Black. Yes, that’s correct, Jack Black is the only man capable of saving the world in this twisted black-comedy. Welcome to the wonderfully entertaining American TV show. Welcome to ‘The Brink.’ This short series (10 episodes) follows a diverse group of people, both American and Pakistani, as Pakistan falls to a vile dictator who plans to nuke Israel and more. Obviously the characters have a mixed response with American generals drooling over the prospect of a world war. Pakistani civilians complaining about the dictator. And Jack Black running around making […]

Star wars videos: episode 2

Not so long ago, in basements, dorm rooms and anywhere with a decent pc, fans were slaving away making fan videos….. Guardians of the galaxy star wars trailer Mashup Alex luthor’s Mashup videos are always on point and pretty well done to say the least. This is no exception. When Guardians of the Galaxy was released it was hailed by some as the next Star wars, but we all know that Star wars remains the dominant sci-fi epic. So to put these two in one epic trailer makes for some entertaining viewing. Mad max/Star wars Mashup The popularity of the latest instalment in the mad max movies was sure to lead to this. Watch as furiosa brandishes a lightsaber and […]

Into the badlands

“The wars were so long ago nobody even remembers. Darkness and fear ruled until the time of the barons, seven men and women who forged order out of chaos. People flocked to them for protection. That protection became servitude. They banished guns and trained armies of lethal fighters they called Clippers. This world is built on blood. Nobody is innocent here. Welcome to the Badlands.” – Opening credits. I enjoy Fallout. I enjoy post-apocalyptic worlds. (Apart from Mad Max. I don’t touch anything Australian, on principle). So when I got my hands on ‘Into The Badlands’ -the latest gore fest from AMC- I was rather excited. The show is only six episodes in, and it is pretty much up in […]

Blindspot

There is something delicious about mysteries. For me, it’s the twists and turns of the journey, the encounters with delicious characters and the glorious eureka moment when the scales fall from your eyes and all becomes clear. There is almost nothing as delicious as that. Now my personal choice of mystery/thriller/crime series tends to lean significantly more towards the UK. I’ve always found the British thriller to be far more entertaining and twisted than anything North America can produce. That is until I found Blindspot. Blindspot is a relatively new TV series (September 2015), that revolves around a group of FBI agents and their latest colleague -a tattooed woman with no memory of her life before they found her.  Now […]

Star Wars Character Introductions: Feels the same

*This is not a review!* The Star wars franchise means many things to many people. To most fans, it might be the epitome of sci-fi space opera, while equally symbolising how the vision of a movie’s creator can clash with what the fans have come to expect and enjoy about his creation and in so doing alienate them from it. After having seen “Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens”, I came out thinking about how it differed and also how similar it was to the other movies in the series. I’m referring to the way that they chose to frame this movie, this introduction to a whole new trilogy and how it was like “The Phantom Menace” and the […]

Dark Matter – Firefly for the villainous

I enjoyed Firefly. It was a fantastic series full of interesting characters, unique plot-lines and delicious Sci-Fi twists and turns. So like many, I was saddened when the series came to an abrupt end. But, I was glad to find that there was a similar Canadian series floating around the multiverse, and that series is Dark Matter. Now Dark Matter is a relatively new series (July 2015) filmed and produced completely in Canada. It is filled with a plethora of Canadian actors… and a lost Australian. (She’s only in for one episode though). Unlike Firefly the series begins with a group of memory addled people waking on a spacecraft. After a brief punch-up they establish a pecking order and choose […]

The BFG is being given the touch of movie magic it deserves and we’ve just received the first glimpse

The BFG is an acronym that rings a bell of recognition in the back of most of our minds. If you were a literary geek in school you probably read, and fell in love, with this Roald Dahl classic tale of escape and heroism. And if you were a gamer in the 1990’s you are likely to link the BFG with the game Doom, where it represented a “Bio Force Gun” or “Big, Uh, Freakin’ Gun”, but this is a discussion for a completely different article (and one we should have, because you know, Doom!). When rumours started about the Big Friendly Giant being adapted to film, I’m not shy to admit that I was more than a little bit […]
