FILM VS WRITTEN WORD!

“It ain’t whatcha write, it’s the way atcha write it.” —Jack Kerouac. The written word captures our imagination; while films show the spoils of our mind to the world. Both of these mediums are a fantastic way of expressing ideas and concepts. However the battle-lines between readers and watchers is moving closer, as famous works of literary genius are transformed into fantastic high-budget films; then transformed back into print. So, Wookiee, you get books based on the film, which itself is based on a book. Thus giving you ONE film and TWO distinct books. All of which have their own fanatics lining the streets and flogging themselves in abject worship of “their” beloved personal choice. All this leaves us with […]

5 SCI-FI SHOWS YOU SHOULD WATCH BEFORE YOU DIE!

“Klaatu barada nikto” – The Day the Earth Stood Still. Once again I have attempted to avoid the cliche and focus on the independent. That means you’ll see no Star Trek, no Doctor Who, no Star Wars.  Rule 3 – “Always carry a minimum of 2 reliable, lethal weapons.” Welcome to this, the last in our five part look into all things zombie. Last week we looked at the end of civilization. In little over 38 days after initial infection, most of the human race would be some form of zombie, and the world we know would be gone. But what if you were one of the lucky ones? What if you survived, what would you do then? Well a number of people have given this a lot of thought. Over the past decade, dozens of books, manuals, videos, and survival kits have been created to deal with this possibility.  Rule 10 – “Only pull the trigger […]

ZOMBIES: Fact, fiction, or theoretical possibility? PART 1

“[I was taken] to the house, whose inhabitants are deprived of light; to the place where dust is their sustenance, their food clay. They are clothed, like a bird, with feathered raiment.” – Gilgamesh. I had an idea for a nice little article about the undead. But, little did I know, that the sweet and innocent article would quickly turn into a rambling monster of reborn pain and re-purposed flesh. ZOMBIES! Love them or hate them; they are part of our culture; and our Wednesdays. But how long have they been in our culture; and what is our fascination with them? STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS

“Dammit, man! I’m a doctor, not a physicist!” – Bones McCoy. In 2009 a new Star Trek film was released. (I’m sure you saw it.) Fans of the original Star Trek were instantly torn between loyalty for their original family or for the new guys. And I must say the new guys were a sight to behold. Since then we have been waiting for the next film in this re-imagined franchise to be released, and this year (2013) our wait will be over. “I like this ship! You know, it’s exciting!” – Scotty. Since the announcement of the next film, the internet has become a breeding ground for rumours, half-baked ideas, conspiracies and a never ending multi-sided argument regarding the […]
