TOTAL WAR: ROME 2

“During war, the laws are silent.” – Quintus Tullius Cicero. The Creative Assembly, creators of the multi-award winning Total War series are about to do it again. September 2013 sees the release of the highly anticipated TOTAL WAR: ROME 2. With new graphics, new units, new factions, new gameplay, new EVERYTHING! Rome 2 is set to be one of the biggest selling games of all time. “Despise not death, but welcome it, for nature wills it like all else.”- Marcus Aurelius. A major addition to the Rome series is Naval Combat. First seen in Empire: Total War, naval combat has become a fan favourite. And I’ll admit I’m looking forward to reenacting the Battle of Actium, and many others. “I […]

Frank Klepacki: God of Game-Music!

DragonStrike. (Westwood Studios, 1990.) You’ve been waiting a long time for this article, Wookiee; and finally, your Klepacki dreams are coming true. Well, some of your dreams at any rate. Well, the pleasant ones. The one’s without the greasy, instrument incorporated, Cain fueled (See what I did there?) orgies. “Who is Frank Klepacki?” you ask. (Don’t have a heart attack, Wookiee. Not everyone is as awesome as you. ) For those of you who like music, yet are not familiar with, Mr. Klepacki. You’re in for a treat. Command and Conquer: Red Alert. (Westwood Studios, 1996.) Frank Kelpacki is the composer behind ALL the music employed by the former Westwood Studios (and it’s descendents) in their numerous and fantastic video-games. […]

War For The Overworld.

WAR: This is the year for dreams. Since 1999, I, and many of you, have been patiently waiting for a worthy successor to the legend of gaming, Dungeon Keeper 2.  (That Dungeons business doesn’t count. It was ass gravy of the worst kind!) FOR: In the latter quarter of 1999, Dungeon Keeper 3: War for the Overworld was announced, but soon cancelled in March, 2000. Since then we have waited in antici……..pation for our Dungeon Keeper dreams to come true. Started as part of the Kickstarter campaign, which ran from 29 November, 2012 to 3 January, 2013 (receiving rave reviews, and over R2.5 million in pledges) this upcoming strategy game and SPIRITUAL (that means in is NOT, Dungeon Keeper; but […]

Watch Dogs

I had a dream. A dream that one day, in the future, someone would invent a free-roaming, open world video-game. A world in which you were only limited by your mind, not by the confines of the map. A world in which all (most) doors opened for you. A world in which you could speak to anyone and do almost anything. A world of limitless possibilities. Guess what? UBISOFT Montreal (Assassins Creed, Prince of Persia) have created that dream. And it’s name is Watch Dogs. THE STORY SO FAR: Watch Dogs revolves around a highly skilled “hacker/parkour expert” named, Aiden Pearce (Naom Jenkins – Saw II and Saw IV.)(Yes, you read correctly, Parkour. That’s the lads who run around the […]

FATE OF THE DRAGON

“He who knows when he can fight and when he cannot, will be victorious.” – Sun Tzu. What a mess that was; 45 minutes of building, resource collecting and assembling forces; 10 minutes of planning and counter planning; and what happens? Our entire army gets wiped out within 5 minutes. Granted it was only a minor loss – 500 or so men and equipment. Our mines still have iron, our cities still have trees, resources are still being gathered and our people shall rebuild the armies lost. But that is not the point, it’s the principle of the thing. Despite all our planning, all our skill, all our brilliance. We were still ousted by a damned A.I. But such is […]

TOP 5: NON-LETHAL WEAPONS.

“Sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war.” – Donald Trump. It’s a Wednesday and that means…. WEAPONS DAY! Weapons day… Wednesday. You get it? It’s funny because it’s weaponsday.. like Wednesday with weapons in it. HAHA! Right so this week, I’ve decided to pay homage to the 5 non-lethal and least effective weapons in gaming history. 5: BLACKJACK: THIEF. I love the Thief Franchise. The thrill of sneaking around and subduing your enemies with the aid of stealth was fantastic. Granted – for those of you who have played the game – the gas arrows as well as flash bombs, and gas mines were incredibly effective at taking care of your foes. However, […]

Planetside 2

“Ylca, landing his Galaxy after a practice run.” Most of us enjoy a good Science-Fiction title. And a large number of us enjoy a good multi-player ground war. Though the latter can become rather stale as a handful of friends get bored shooting at each other on the same never ending map. But as of the 20th of November, 2012, all that changed. As the massive, non-stop, intergalactic, multi-player ground war, known as Planetside 2  was launched. Now my colleagues have discussed this game before. However, instead of repeating their work, I’ve decided to focus predominantly on the factions and classes involved. For those of you who are not familiar with Planetside, you’re in for a treat. “Ylca, brings the […]

DLC: Quality VS Quantity?

Do you remember the 1990’s, and the early 2000’s? I do. I remember the glory days of purchasing video-game expansion packs. The thrill of taking the box off of the shelf; the delight in purchasing it; the anticipation of opening the box; the overwhelming joy as you removed the CD case, manual, and other contents; the joy of installing a proven product that added more to your game. I miss those days. DOWNLOADABLE: Over the past few years the world has become more connected, and marginalized. We no longer have to leave our homes to purchase items. Films, music, games, even food and other services can be easily purchased on the internet. But with all this convenience there comes a […]

FTL: Faster Than Light.

FASTER: On the 14th of September, 2012, a game was released that brought back a number of great RTS traditions. That game is FTL. FTL is a rogue-like space simulator; in which player takes COMPLETE command/control of a single customizable space vessel – Star Trek/Firefly –  as they attempt to navigate their way back home. Of course they are hounded by enemy forces as they go. “In any given episode of those classic shows, the captain is always yelling “Reroute power to shields!” or giving commands to the engineer now that their Warp Core is on fire. We wanted that experience, as opposed to the “dog fighting in space” that most video-games focus on. We wanted a game where we […]

HEAVY METAL: FRANCHISE.

“There was no way I was gonna walk around this place with my dork hanging out!” – Den. HEAVY METAL: 36 years on. Have you watched the “Heavy Metal” films, read the magazines, played the game? You haven’t! Well, you must rectify that at once. Since 1 April, 1977, Heavy Metal magazine and all its offspring have been thrilling the world with tales of horror, science-fiction, good old fashioned adventure stories and pictures of semi-naked warrior ladies. Over the course of this – long – article we shall look back over the past 38 years of the Heavy Metal franchise. The reason it is called, Heavy Metal? Well, that’s simple. Heavy Metal music: Black Sabbath, Devo, and Grand Funk Railroad […]
