Triborn – Interview with Adam Sonnet

Sometimes dreams can come true; and for we lucky few a dream has come true. After decades of waiting Carrie Henn (Newt from Aliens) is finally returning to wonderful world of movies in the fantastic Sci-Fi film, Triborn. To top it off I recently sat down and chatted to the man behind this Sci-Fi feast, Adam Sonnet. Would you care to introduce yourself and give us a little of your film background? My name is Adam Sonnet and I’m the writer, a producer, and director for TRIBORN. I first want to thank John Crofts for reaching out to us to cover this story. For those that don’t know me or Sonnet Realm Films (SRF), we are inspired to produce fantasy […]

Has rAge Outgrown Itself ?

rAge is the premier event on the Johannesburg nerd scene, and has been a staple event for tech heads since the early days of my childhood. Initially a purely computer convention, featuring new technology and games that were on the way, it has grown over the years to include so much more. From comic books to cosplay, figurines to geek apparel, rAge truly has come to be the proverbial Mecca of the South African geek and nerd community. But has its grown too much ? Now before you all crucify me, let me clarify my point. I have been sitting here looking through the various posts from rAge, as one usually does after such events. I’ve been going through the […]

The Neighbours Magical Medievil Fayre, Now with Authentic Rain

Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the annual Medieval Fayre, hosted by Neighbours. The weekend took off with a mostly welcomed return of the spring rains. Undeterred by all the falling wetness I pushed onward to the adventure. (You and I both know Scotland has two types of weather: Wet and Wetter. Ed) Despite being dreary, drizzling and mud soaked, I was immediately impressed with the turnout at the annual fayre. I surveyed my surroundings, all manner of stalls were there and people buzzed around like bees after mead. After successfully navigating the maze of mud and sludge I came across a series of blacksmiths hammering away, while on the horizon armoured knights were battling away. [youtube id=”vvhQBQpWKH8″ […]

My Daughter is a Nerd, you know like from The Big Bang Theory

Lately there has be a lot of blog posts, YouTube videos and people asking for advice on how to explain cosplay to your parents. I am lucky in the sense that my mom has never has a problem with regards to my nerd/geek habits or tendencies. She might not completely understand them and you can often hear her yelling things at me along the lines of “Can you shut up about cosplay now” or “Did you really have to buy another Monster High doll, how many do you have now” So I do not fully understand when people say that their parents forbid them from doing cosplay, watching anime and playing games. I think that the reason I am lucky […]

The Tarantula Corner

Arachnophobes had best look away now, for today we speak to masters of all things eight legged. Today we speak to, The Tarantula Corner. What’s the history of the tarantula corner? The history began when Charl Nigrini and myself, Taryn Giulia Wood, began with our own tarantula collection. Through much research we discovered that very little is supplied to tarantula owners to properly care for their spiders. Through this we began designing and then making terrariums specified to each of our spiders, from the terrarium itself to the inside. Realising the potential we started the tarantula corner. One may ask, why tarantulas? Both of us are intensely fascinated by spiders in general, tarantulas happen to be particularly interesting and beautiful. […]

Roeks Beer

Today we speak to one of South Africa’s best brew masters about his fantastic beery creations. So what’s the history of Roeks Beer? I would make beer in my hobby brewery and friends and family when visiting would always say Roeks give me a beer, but in my absence they would ask my wife Lauran for a Roeks Beer. So when we started commercially the name ROEKS BEER was the natural choice for a brand name. How long have you been around? I brewed my first concoction when I was 8 years old; commercially we only started production in 2007. What makes your Roeks Beer unique? We do not follow BJCP style guidelines, we do not add funny stuff and […]

Anonyma

Today we speak to the person behind Anonyma, a jeweller with no equal. So what’s the history of Anonyma? Before Anonyma, I was part of the working class exploring different areas of marketing and did beading on the side as a hobby and for some extra money. My life changed for the better when a friend came to visit and we discussed a course he was on, Jewellery Manufacturing. He told me about how he was learning to melt, pour and shape metal into beautiful pieces of jewellery – well that was me, my true passion sneaked into my life and took over. After much planning and discussion with my man, we decided that I would stop working, start studying […]

EcoGeek

Today we speak to an amazing jeweller, EcoGeek. What inspired you to create EcoGeek SA? A while back, I noticed that Wizards of the Coast had started putting ‘additional marketing cards’ in booster packets. They have marketing write-ups on both sides of the card, so you can’t really use them to play like you can with token cards. I’ve used these cards as bookmarks, card dividers and coasters. Although, it always seemed a bit of a waste as the cards themselves have beautiful art on them. After a bit of research, I decided that the easiest thing I could make with what I had at hand, would be earrings. How does EcoGeek SA differ from other earring masters? Well, for […]
