Geekfest 2015

Deep in the urban jungle of South Africa, a discovery was made. A mosquito that had just taken a blood meal before being squished between the final pages of “Genetic engineering for Dummies”, is found. The last victim of this mosquito was a Geek. Long thought to have been extinct, this chance discovery means one thing: a chance to revive the species! So here there I was, safe and content in my office. I received a mysterious message via Facebook: an invitation to Geekfest. I had never heard of this event before so it piqued my interests and I accepted the invitation. On the 4th of July, I set off on an adventure to Geekfest to see what this was […]

Geekfest: a Quest with a Goat

It was a crisp evening as Shadow and  (I) Wookiee strolled along the cosplay soaked fields of Geekfest. Merrily we made our way to the distant lands of archery to harass the the Cave Troll and his fellows at their stand. On the way to our destination we were bought to an abrupt stop upon hearing an alien rumbling in the distance. Carefully we headed in the direction of the bizarre din, and there, emerging from the trees, we encountered a majestic beast. Towering above cosplayer and man, the mighty Hazard Goat wielding his glorious axe of +12 sound. His horns glistening in the setting sun. His large muscular legs wobbling under the immense weight of his weapons of joy […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 4, aka There was a food fight!

We wander around the venue for an hour or so, getting to grips with the locals, the “normals”, the unique shops, their deliciously naughty products and their diverse myriad of owners. Soon we have sampled a plethora of tasty items. We’ve explored everything from comic books to home made armour. We have been met by, and greeted with love, a legion of Andy. (See what I did there Rebellion Boys fans?) In the distance a horde is massing in front of a large bouncy bag, as a queue of loons is led around a corner, raised high above it on a magnificent steel structure -all shiny and sexual- and the flung from it with a fury or screaming hair and wobbly […]

GeekFest 2015 Cosplay Competition

As many of you will know by now, this past weekend saw one of the first major conventions of the year for Johannesburg. Geekfest. Now I am not going to go into depth of the event itself. (We’re covering that. -Ed) Rather I am going to be looking at the Geekfest cosplay completion form both a spectator’s view as well as someone who took part in the completion. The whole event was in a logistical nightmare and was one of the most poorly organised competitions. The competition started when the cosplayers were called to the -so called- stage area. With this call, the spectators also started to make their way towards the event to get a good view of the […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 3, aka It continues

A parade of winged dogs, and horned hounds begins the Cosplay Competition. Once they have been judged, the Hobbits are unleashed upon the stage. They sing and dance and perform as you would expect from tiny people -lots of enthusiasm and smiles, with demented foot work and awesome power slides. Some of the pets and children put on a better show than their parents. Then the crowd goes quiet as the main event begins! Over the course of the next 3 hours or so, seventy odd cosplayers take to the stage. Some of them come alone; others come in small teams; a few walk on, quickly bow and then leave. But the best -they put on a show worthy or […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 2, aka It has begun

It is just after 10.15 am, and the masses have finally poured into the venue. Well some of them have poured in. The majority are still fighting their way towards the gate, battling Klingons, and zombies, and LOL fans, and some guy called Gerald. What a bastard. Regardless, the venue is now open and Geekfest 2015, has begun! As the diverse plethora of characters, cosplayers and “normals” swarm across the venue like some sort of living rainbow jelly, I stand alone and abandoned near the site for the upcoming cosplay competition. Wookiee and Metal Pangolin have run off to locate some sort of food based comic book stand, or comic book based food stand, or something; while Morph-Man has transformed […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 1, aka Rise and Geek.

Once again I am alive and awake before the first rays of sunlight pierce my curtains. Within a matter of some hours (Yes, I am a slow mover in the morning), I am dressed and preparing breakfast for the masses that will soon descend on my house; for today we must feast well and plan correctly as we shall soon be spending much of the day assaulting Geekfest 2015. As the crisp morning air bleeds into every gap it can find, crawling across the wooden floors and sending shivers up our malanky legs, the masses, my horde, have already begun to consume their fine repast. A monstrous meal worthy of Wookiee, has been dished out on this fine 4th of […]

South African Metal Music Awards – Part 2

Lights. Camera. Interviews! Our first victims stands before us, but they are far from jumpy and nervous. Well, Brandon looks a little nervous, but what he lacks in on camera skills, Musa more than makes up for them both as he fires round after round of urban dialect, metal enthusiasms, and cannonade of expletives that would cause the heavens to weep had they not already had representation at the awards to keep everything on the straight and metal. “It was tiresome but everything went as planned.” – Musa, 11th Hour. As soon as Musa has finished his short presidential speech, and Brandon has made enough constipated faces at the cameras, the M.C opens the awards in the distance with a […]

AIX – Geek Mini Expo

Today we speak to the organisers of the upcoming AIX – Geek Mini Expo. What’s the history of AIX – Geek Mini Expo? To explain the history of AIX, I would have to start with the history of A.I. Fest (www.ai-fest.co.za).  A.I. Fest, currently, is the portion of Anime Infection (Pty) Ltd. that focuses on gaming events. We host tournaments for trading card games (Magic: the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon), and we also recently started hosting tournaments for Dice Masters, and we also host casual Cosplay competitions, and sometimes even host Lolita events. When it all started, we were a bunch of friends wanting to host monthly LAN events, we had a vision of being as big as Mayhem or […]
