Geekfest 2015 – Part 2, aka It has begun

It is just after 10.15 am, and the masses have finally poured into the venue. Well some of them have poured in. The majority are still fighting their way towards the gate, battling Klingons, and zombies, and LOL fans, and some guy called Gerald. What a bastard. Regardless, the venue is now open and Geekfest 2015, has begun! As the diverse plethora of characters, cosplayers and “normals” swarm across the venue like some sort of living rainbow jelly, I stand alone and abandoned near the site for the upcoming cosplay competition. Wookiee and Metal Pangolin have run off to locate some sort of food based comic book stand, or comic book based food stand, or something; while Morph-Man has transformed […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 1, aka Rise and Geek.

Once again I am alive and awake before the first rays of sunlight pierce my curtains. Within a matter of some hours (Yes, I am a slow mover in the morning), I am dressed and preparing breakfast for the masses that will soon descend on my house; for today we must feast well and plan correctly as we shall soon be spending much of the day assaulting Geekfest 2015. As the crisp morning air bleeds into every gap it can find, crawling across the wooden floors and sending shivers up our malanky legs, the masses, my horde, have already begun to consume their fine repast. A monstrous meal worthy of Wookiee, has been dished out on this fine 4th of […]

South African Metal Music Awards – Part 2

Lights. Camera. Interviews! Our first victims stands before us, but they are far from jumpy and nervous. Well, Brandon looks a little nervous, but what he lacks in on camera skills, Musa more than makes up for them both as he fires round after round of urban dialect, metal enthusiasms, and cannonade of expletives that would cause the heavens to weep had they not already had representation at the awards to keep everything on the straight and metal. “It was tiresome but everything went as planned.” – Musa, 11th Hour. As soon as Musa has finished his short presidential speech, and Brandon has made enough constipated faces at the cameras, the M.C opens the awards in the distance with a […]

AIX – Geek Mini Expo

Today we speak to the organisers of the upcoming AIX – Geek Mini Expo. What’s the history of AIX – Geek Mini Expo? To explain the history of AIX, I would have to start with the history of A.I. Fest (www.ai-fest.co.za).  A.I. Fest, currently, is the portion of Anime Infection (Pty) Ltd. that focuses on gaming events. We host tournaments for trading card games (Magic: the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon), and we also recently started hosting tournaments for Dice Masters, and we also host casual Cosplay competitions, and sometimes even host Lolita events. When it all started, we were a bunch of friends wanting to host monthly LAN events, we had a vision of being as big as Mayhem or […]

Continuum Warp

A little music event for the soul. So what’s the history of Continuum Warp? ContinuumWarp is a new EDM festival based on the European EDM Festival Concept of an overall event experience with high level production of sets, decoration and general uplifting environment embracing the EDM culture of LOVE, LIFE and the UNITY of humanity. What makes your EDM festival unique? One of the big differences between a music concert and a dance festival is that at a concert all the lights are on the band, here all the lighting is around the set and on the audience. The main stage – although the performance area is small as the DJ’s are behind the decks and have very little chance […]

Jukes Cosplay Competition

On Friday (22 May) I had the privilege to attend Jukes Club and eSports Lounge very first cosplay competition. Jukes is a club which is located on the corner of Henrick Verwoerd and Jacaranda Road in Centurion and can be found above the Postnet and has a speacil flare of its own. When you first enter the club you will get the impression that it is like most clubs. A basic seating area and bar as soon as you walk in with a dance floor to the left that opens up onto a balcony. Yet what makes this club different from others is that it caters to gamers, nerds and geeks in general with its set up that can be […]

MIDLAN

You’ve got to love a good LAN. And MID LAN, is a damn good LAN! So what’s the history of MID LAN? Starting in 2012, a group of friends came together and decided to create a LAN event, due to the fact that there were no active LANs in the area (Pretoria). The first venue the LAN hosted at was Carpe Diem Academy. During this period we were called NoxiousGamingLan, but at that time we did not have the time to commit to the LAN (due to matric and university). Our last LAN that was hosted under the name of NoxiousGamingLan was hosted mid-2013. Two years later we decided to continue the LAN events, because other (regular) LAN event were […]

Metalheads Against Xenophobia

Today we speak to someone who is helping better this world through music, and the comradery of the musicians. Samantha Jack is the main co-ordinator and co-founder of Metalheads Against Xenophobia, or MAX Campaign for short. What’s the history of MAX? M.A.X in essence was formed in April 2015 by a group of local metalheads on the chat app, Whatsapp, one random evening whilst discussing a recent Festival we had all attended. Somehow the conversation steered itself to the xenophobic attacks that had been going on. My co founder, Shane, then said “I wish we could do something as metalheads to help educate and spread the word against this, maybe even raise funds to help those people that have been […]

Free Comic Book Day 2015

*yawn* I found myself waking up late, starting with my regular routine and then checking the date.  Why was 2 May important again? *cue light bulb moment* Free comic book day! Time to rush. No! I’m down to my last superhero shirt! That’s pretty much how my Free Comic Book Day began.  Whilst originally I had planned to pull in a group and do my usual trek through all the shops I knew, my plans drastically changed.  I ended up only going to two stores and only with one extra person in tow (not even a comic fan *gasp*). My guest, having just returned from New York from a year long work contract, at least appeared eager to go and was looking forward to […]
