Today we have a bit of a multi-legged treat for you. For today we speak to Daniella Martin, or as she is more widely known, Girl Meets Bug.
Now for those of you who are not familiar with her, Daniella is an Insectivore or lover of Entomophagy. (That’s eating invertebrates. Bugs for the layman.)
Yes, you read that correctly. She is a lover of eating all things bug.

They are abundant, sustainable to farm, and nutritious.

Your favourite buggy meal?

Waxworm tacos.

What’s your message to the world?

Mostly that not eating insects is an irrational choice we can no longer afford to make.

Have you ever been to Africa?

No, sadly. (You’d like it here. We have large bugs.)

So what’s new in your life?

I’m excited about my book coming out Feb 11th! (Check her website for more details.)

How do you get your message out?

I give talks, consult on projects, and write articles.

What sort of food appeals to you?

I like early Native American food. Salmon, succotash, greens – this sort of simply, healthy eating appeals to me.

Do you have any famous people supporting your cause?

Well, both Angelina Jolie and Selma Hayek have spoken about eating crickets.

Who shot first Han Solo or Greedo?

Han Solo. He’d be dead otherwise, right?

I love any kind of Science-Fiction. My husband and I love to watch Science-Fiction and discuss it afterwards – which parts worked for us, which were too much suspension of disbelief.

And literature?

I’m a big fan of certain authors: E. Annie Proulx, Jeanette Winterson, Barbara Kingsolver are some of my favorites.


Again, love the Science-Fiction. Futurama is one of my favorites. Currently, and belatedly, into Mad Men.

Where do you go from here?

I’d love to wind up helping on a project to integrate edible insect farming in hungry areas, or developing a food for the Western market.
