Metal Pangolin’s Comic book roundup
Episode 2: Wrath of the Rise of the Planet of the Pangolins at Dusk
Of all the movies in Marvel studios upcoming slate that has me intrigued, Dr. Strange is is the one that will really test just how well they can put together a movie that stays well within the bounds of the universe they have already constructed while at the same time introducing new and exciting elements to it, that have up until now been absent. “Dr. Strange” will finally introduce magic or something akin to magic to the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU). The title character will be portrayed by fan favourite actor, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) who will be joined by an all-star cast including Tilda Swinton (Chronicles of Narnia) as The Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 years a slave) as the villainous Baron Mordo, Rachel McAdams in an unknown role and Mads Mickelsen as the movies main antagonist (whose identity has yet to be revealed *shakes fist at Marvel*).

Up to this point, everything that seemed magical, including Thor’s hammer, Asgardian technology and even The Scarlet Witch’s powers, has been explained away as advanced technology or in the case of the Scarlet Witch, her powers were induced through the application of technology, so I am curious to see how they will handle the magical aspects that are central to the plot. In the comics, Stephen Strange was an arrogant, successful surgeon who was involved in a car accident that left him with nerve damaged thus preventing him from performing surgery using like he used to. Being the type of person that he was, he sought out every conceivable cure and even went so far as to go to Tibet as a last resort, to seek out mystical solutions to his problem and it is here that his destiny would be changed forever. To cut a long story short, The Ancient one, took the arrogant doctor in, trained him in the mystic arts as his pupil, with the aim of defeating Baron Mordo (another pupil that the of the Ancient Ones had trained) . Needless to say, things took on a mind bending twist involving other dimensional beings who were really really weird, magic spells, psychedelic imagery and, did I mention that they were really weird. Take Eternity as an example. Imagine a concept like Eternity ….but anthropomorphised.
This is the sort of thing that readers had to deal with each time they delved into a Dr. Strange comic and it was great, so great that Pink Floyd even hid an image of Dr. Strange in the cover of their 1968 album “Saucerful of Secrets”. Anyway here’s to hoping that the movie, like “Ant man” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” before it surprises and does something special with the characters it has to bring to life.
“In Bellerieve Prison, far away
From the playgrounds,
is where they spent most of their days
Deadshot, Harley quinn, Katana, Killer Croc, Boomerang, Enchantress, El Diablo
to name but a few
Then Amanda Waller, offered a deal they couldn’t refuse
and placed bombs that would blow up if they ever got loose
They had to go on missions that no one else dared
because “nobody’s gonna miss these baddies when they’re all dead”
They all got in the choppa and before it took off on the mission
Harley Quinn said to the warden “See ya, smell ya later”
They looked onwards to the target, it was almost in sight
The Suicide Squad was just ready to fight “
Sorry for exposing you to my cringe inducing rap skills, but I couldn’t resist the Fresh Prince reference. Will smith leads the team as Deadshot together with Margot Robbie (Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto as the Joker – he plays a big part in the movie, though not as a member of the Squad itself. It will be interesting to see how his take on the “Clown Prince of Crime” differs from previous incarnations of the character brought to life by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton’s “Batman” and Heath Ledger in Christopher Nolans “The Dark knight”. If I were a betting man and based on what little footage of the movie I have seen in the promotional videos, I would say that his take might be over the top but will not be as endearing to fans as Ledgers was. But who knows, he may yet surprise me. I am a pangolin after all.
The movie has been removed from its original release date of October 2016 after some problems were experiencing before filming got off the ground. Ruppert wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was originally meant to direct the movie but the script was constantly being changed which caused the movie’s budget to skyrocket and this led to rescheduling regarding when the movie would begin production. As such, he had other projects to complete and so he departed the project to finish those which left the movie without a director. At the moment, the movie is in pre-production and is being directed by Doug Liman (Edge of tomorrow) although when it will be released is up in the air as Daedpool’s success has meant that Fox is fast tracking it’s sequel or something tied into Deadpool for 2017 and 2018 which is when 2 mystery movies whose titles have yet to be revealed will be released. Things don’t look good for the Cajun at this point. Gambit is to star Channing Tatum as the smooth talking thief whose mutant abilities allow him to charge inorganic objects like playing cards, with energy which then explode upon impact releasing the charged energy contained within. The character was previously seen in the *cough* horrible *cough* X-men Origins: Wolverine movie that also gave us the mouthless Deadpool so I guess it is time for Gambit to get redemption as well.
Oh well, I’ve subjected you to lots and lots of torture. Wasn’t this exciting? No? *Sad face* Oh well. Go forth and save your money for the year to come. Luckily Gambit isn’t on the cards any more *Ba dum Tssh*
