Interview With My Secret Circus. (Band Interview)
Today we speak to Vinny Mancuso of My Secret Circus. My Secret Circus (MSC) mesh together Alt’ metal, rhythm and catchy vocals to create a distinctive sound. Taking you on a ride of energetic anthems, this Melbourne, Australia rap/rock outfit is now about to launch their new music to the world.
Let’s start with this: What’s the history of your band?
Dan started MSC years back. I teamed up with him a few years later. We seemed to have a great writing chemistry that excited us moving forward. We then went through several drummers and bass players till we arrived at the current line up.
What’s your musical history? (Trained or Amateur)?
Both. Initially, I learnt guitar from my father and my own ear, then several teachers and courses later on. Vocally, I was self-taught, then pursued teachers in an effort to develop my technique.
So what can you tell us about your latest album? (Inspiration. Sound. Style.)
Some hardships we faced as a band and personally over the last few years has inspired us. It’s aggressive yet sensitive to our current emotions.
How did you go about making it?
Dan and I sat in our studio and culminated with individual ideas into several coherent pieces that felt right and relevant.
Anything you’ve learnt as you’ve gone along? Or have you simply tried a bit of everything to see how it works?
There’s definitely been a bit of trial and error honing in our sound over the years, but I think we’ve found our happy place with this release lol.
What sort of technology and instruments do you work with?
Your usual instruments, however, we do enjoy the digital/analogue programming side of things as well
Anything you’re keen to use on your next album?
We’re always looking for new gadgets that might enhance our sound, however, songwriting and live performance enhancements always take precedence over a trend tool for us.
Any future plans for your solo work, or do you have other projects on the horizon?
Not at the moment. Right now we’re all very focused on producing the best album we can.
Any plans for upcoming live shows?
Looking forward to touring intensely where ever we can. We pride ourselves on our live shows. We work hard to bring passion and positive energy to our fans. We love performing!
Let’s have a few general questions now.
What do you see as a musicians role in society?
That’s a huge question! I believe it’s about positively changing the world one person at a time. I’m sure the other guys have very different opinions, but call me crazy, but it’s just what I believe (or fantasize about) hahaha.
Anything unique happening musically in your country? (We are based in England and South Africa).
Unfortunately, in Australia, the rock music scene isn’t booming. Our venues are closing down to be replaced by slot machines and other forms of gambling. Yes, it’s legal here! Lol. Luckily for us, our management and label are US based.
Where do you stand on music videos?
I believe they’re still a necessity! Visual art will always enhance audible art in my opinion. Why not affect two senses instead of one?!
-Do you see their value in today’s world?
Absolutely! I think they still have the same effect on fans and aspiring musicians as they did for me growing up. Besides putting faces to the music (most of the time), it’s still a great medium for fans to learn more about the artist’s visual expression of their work.
What’s your take on the “new” technology? (Bandcamp, Soundcloud, MP3)
I think all these platforms are great, in terms of accessibility. The musical world has become a very small one. Anyone can be heard at the click of a key. I suppose one issue is trying to sort through the heavy traffic.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Get rid of music reality tv programs! (I highly approve – Ed)
Any advice for new bands?
Persistence is key! A life of a musician ain’t always awesome but hang in there through the rough times. (There’s plenty of em!)lol
