Sci-Fi Con

Well, well, well, we’re almost there, almost at Sci-Fi Con. (14 November. Nine days left and counting). It’s been a few months coming. A few months in the making. And a few months of additional stress, and excited off the wall Jedi-Style bouncing. Soon the great day will be upon us; and we will all be thrown into the world of delicious geekiness and combined nerdiness. All taking place at the surreal looking Midrand English Primary School. (10.00 to 4.30) We have a fantastic day planned. We have well over a dozen stalls in attendance… Powered By Fandom Sin Bin Eye Voodoo Dark Carnival GLOW CwaZyLeigh Creations Fairy Fountains The Virtual Space And so many more…. There will be a […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 5, aka Goodbye for now

And here we are, at the end of an amazing day. It’s just got 11 PM, and Wookiee and I have just finished our last drink at the banquette. (I had a Guinness. He had a coke. Thought you’d like to know.) As I stand here, the cold night air crawling across Hubbard Park, followed closely by a soupy fog, I think back over the amazing day that we have had, and sadly of all the events we have missed. That’s right. Even we have regrets. Even though Geekfest 2015, has been an absolutely thrilling event, and our writers have experienced a number of amazing and fantastic happenings, we couldn’t see everything we wanted to see. There’s a list of […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 4, aka There was a food fight!

We wander around the venue for an hour or so, getting to grips with the locals, the “normals”, the unique shops, their deliciously naughty products and their diverse myriad of owners. Soon we have sampled a plethora of tasty items. We’ve explored everything from comic books to home made armour. We have been met by, and greeted with love, a legion of Andy. (See what I did there Rebellion Boys fans?) In the distance a horde is massing in front of a large bouncy bag, as a queue of loons is led around a corner, raised high above it on a magnificent steel structure -all shiny and sexual- and the flung from it with a fury or screaming hair and wobbly […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 3, aka It continues

A parade of winged dogs, and horned hounds begins the Cosplay Competition. Once they have been judged, the Hobbits are unleashed upon the stage. They sing and dance and perform as you would expect from tiny people -lots of enthusiasm and smiles, with demented foot work and awesome power slides. Some of the pets and children put on a better show than their parents. Then the crowd goes quiet as the main event begins! Over the course of the next 3 hours or so, seventy odd cosplayers take to the stage. Some of them come alone; others come in small teams; a few walk on, quickly bow and then leave. But the best -they put on a show worthy or […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 2, aka It has begun

It is just after 10.15 am, and the masses have finally poured into the venue. Well some of them have poured in. The majority are still fighting their way towards the gate, battling Klingons, and zombies, and LOL fans, and some guy called Gerald. What a bastard. Regardless, the venue is now open and Geekfest 2015, has begun! As the diverse plethora of characters, cosplayers and “normals” swarm across the venue like some sort of living rainbow jelly, I stand alone and abandoned near the site for the upcoming cosplay competition. Wookiee and Metal Pangolin have run off to locate some sort of food based comic book stand, or comic book based food stand, or something; while Morph-Man has transformed […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 1, aka Rise and Geek.

Once again I am alive and awake before the first rays of sunlight pierce my curtains. Within a matter of some hours (Yes, I am a slow mover in the morning), I am dressed and preparing breakfast for the masses that will soon descend on my house; for today we must feast well and plan correctly as we shall soon be spending much of the day assaulting Geekfest 2015. As the crisp morning air bleeds into every gap it can find, crawling across the wooden floors and sending shivers up our malanky legs, the masses, my horde, have already begun to consume their fine repast. A monstrous meal worthy of Wookiee, has been dished out on this fine 4th of […]

Stuart Smith: Blade Master

Today we speak to local Blade Smith, Stuart Smith. Why Blade-smithing? I didn’t really choose it, it sort of fell into my lap as an alternative to the job I had at the time as a sales rep. I never had a prior interest in knives or knife making. All that has changed now and it is a huge part of my life. I enjoy the primal pleasure that one attains by beating red hot steel with a hammer, bending it to my will. There is nothing quite like it. There is meditation in the repetitive nature of hammering and shaping of steel. If you’ve had a bad day there is nothing better to relieve stress How long have you […]

Anton De Wit – Bowyer

925|Rebellion is very pleased indeed to bring you this interview with Master bowyer (“a maker or seller of archers’ bows”), Anton De Wit who is also the bow maker for the upcoming movie ‘Norsemen’. I have been privileged to shoot one of his bows and I have to say that it was one of the best bows I’ve ever had the good fortune to shoot. And so erstwhile readers, have a read and give this gent your business. Let’s start with a little introduction if you would be so kind. I’ve been a full time bowyer for about 10 years now but I’ve been shooting and making these mystical creatures for as long as I can remember…. Why bows? It […]

How A Modern Movie Got Archery Right .

‘Ello again you lot. Miss me? Good! To begin this article I will start off with what I was supposed to do… I was supposed to write out another venomous rant about my top five worst archery moments in movies. Two things stopped me doing that though. Number one is that I would most likely end up getting hate-fueled comments about already having done that and being a lazy bog with no real point.  Secondly, I wouldn’t know where to begin. So instead I am going to do something different. I am actually going to praise something. And that something is none other than Pixar Studios‘ Brave. Now let’s take a look at the delightful lass’s suitors. Every single mistake […]

Traditional Archery.

So this little feature will be right up our geek readers’ alley. As many of you know (or can probably see from the above pic if you put your glasses on) archery has wormed its way into all sorts of media these days, the likes of Skyrim to name but one. But how many of you would actually like to know something more, to whet those geek fantasies we all share? Okay, maybe not all you filthy perverts. (That means you, Ed.) (You know me so well, Troll. -Ed.) Or perhaps you might actually want to get your hands on one that doesn’t look like a cheap Chinese rip off plastic cup flinger that causes your cat to question your […]
