Metal Pangolin’s Comic book roundup

Episode 2: Wrath of the Rise of the Planet of the Pangolins at Dusk Dr. Strange Of all the movies in Marvel studios upcoming slate that has me intrigued, Dr. Strange is is the one that will really test just how well they can put together a movie that stays well within the bounds of the universe they have already constructed while at the same time introducing new and exciting elements to it, that have up until now been absent. “Dr. Strange” will finally introduce magic or something akin to magic to the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU). The title character will be portrayed by fan favourite actor, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) who will be joined by an all-star cast including Tilda […]

Metal Pangolin’s Deadpool Review

Deadpool was not treated well the first time he appeared on screen in X-men Origin’s Wolverin. The attempt by 20th Century fox to tell the origin story of the beserker, adamantium skeleton-laced, Canadian, claw popping mutant known around the world as Wolverine. In this botched attempt at a movie, Deadpool was only recognisable as the character he is in the comics by name alone and this left fuming. I guess this is the point in the review where I tell you who Deadpool is and what his powers are and all that other stuff but like the movie, I think it would be appropriate to go back to the start and recount how the character came about in the comics. […]

ZASCHITNIKI “GUARDIANS” – Upcoming Russian Superhero Movie

We have become so accustomed to superhero’s appearing on the big screen (particularly the Marvel variety) that they no longer seem exciting anymore due to the same formula that they use in their movies. Perhaps this is the beginning of the decline in the comic book movie genre…but, let us not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Let us take the example of this promising movie hailing all the way from Russia. Directed by Armenian director Sarik Andreasyan , “Zaschitniki” or “Guardians” tells the tale of a team of heroes created during the Cold War and imbued with extraordinary powers that allow them to perform incredible feats in the event of an attack by supernatural threats upon Russia. Years pass […]

rAge Is In All of Us

“That’s how it starts. The fever, the rage. The feeling of powerlessness- that turns good men….cruel” – Alfred pennyworth Those are the immortal words uttered by Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler to describe the symptoms exhibited by individuals that have the rAge and are unable to go to The Dome . It is a condition caused by a symbiotie that turns its host into a rAge zombie whose sole purpose is to go to the Dome in Randburg where they revel in all the entertainment on offer there. ANNE RICE’S THE WITCHING HOUR (Comic book)

Anne rice is known mostly for her books on vampires but there were other books that she wrote on other paranormal entities. One of them was turned into a comic book. “The Witching hour” was based, Anne rice’s, novel of the same name was originally published in 1992. Only 5 issues were ever published even though it had been planned as a 13 issue series. I have been unable to ascertain why they only published 5 issues instead of 13, whatever the reason, have done fans a disservice . Like the novel on which is was based, the comic book told the story of the Mayfair witches who live in New Orleans. The story starts off from the point of […]

THE BATTLE FOR HATFIELD SQUARE

What do you get when an immovable object encounters an unstoppable force? Well, in the case of Hatfield square, it seems like that object gets demolished. Hatfield square or “The Square” as it was popularly known as, was a popular hub for students featuring bars, clubs and everything in between. All of this changed on that fateful day when Loki of Asgard, tore open a portal in the sky and the alien workmen poured out. What Loki hadn’t counted on was that his brother, Thor and his companions, The Avengers, were across the road enjoying some shawarma. The portal tore open over Dropzone and the alien horde emerged accompanied by what can only be described as strobe lights and smoke […]

Ant man

The Man in the Ant Hill was a story that was published in the 1962 comic Tales to Astonish #27 and featured the first appearance of the character that would go on to be known as Ant Man. However, the first Ant Man, Hank Pym, although featured in this movie, isn’t its protagonist, in fact, the torch is passed onto Scott Lang who, in the comics, was the second person to go by the nom de guerre of Ant Man and go on to save the world. The latest instalment in the ever expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe (as it has come to be known) starts with the introduction of the, afore mentioned unlikely hero Scott Lang, played here by Paul Rudd […]

The Shared Superhero Cinematic Universe

It isn’t easy being a superhero. Fighting bad guys, no salary, the constant risk that is placed on loved ones if the bad guys were to discover your secret identity. It therefore comes as no surprise that several heroes on the big screen have, over the years assumed several monikers in different movies. My theory as to why they would change their superhero personas has to do with the above mentioned complications that can arise when someone dedicates his life to fighting crime. Here, I will reveal the identities of the various heroes and the journeys that they have taken since acquiring their powers and how they are all connected to each other. Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: […]
