In-depth triple shoot cosplay. (Part 3)

-Valka- Welcome to the third and final week of this unique cosplay journey. Today we look at the final and most complex cosplay produced by Adele (Gothcatgirl’s Cosplay Adventures) and Andrew (Bake by AJ). What made you decide to go with Valka? I was re-watching How to Train Your Dragon for the umpteenth time, and she suddenly jumped out at me. I loved how eccentric and misunderstood she was. How isolated. And how she turned that into a force for good. Also, the outfit was insane. The level  of engineering that would go into the outfit, was almost a case of the unachievable. Which meant it was a challenge. What sort of research did you do for Valka? Apart from re-watching […]

In-depth triple shoot cosplay. (Part 2)

-Viking Maiden- Welcome back. Welcome to the second week of this unique cosplay-photography experience.  Once again we join legendary cosplayer Adele (Gothcatgirl’s Cosplay Adventures) and photographer Andrew (Bake by AJ). Why Vikings? Why not?  I have Scottish blood in me, so I claim a wee bit Norse blood!  Also, vikings are badass.  Their gods are epic.  Their lives were dramatic. (Nothing like dying of old age at thirty. Ed) No horned helmet? Nope, according to archaeological digs they wore leather and beaten steel helms.  No horns in sight. (They wore skull caps, like their Norman descendants.) The horns became popular when it was in operas in the 1800’s. How did the TV series influence you? Utterly.  Lagertha and the other […]

In-depth triple shoot cosplay. (Part 1)

-Cleopatra- A few weeks ago I was invited to a cosplay photoshoot. Now I have been to a few such shoots over the past few years, but this one was something different. For one, we were shooting three cosplay characters at once -most of whom were retiring after the shoot. We also decided that we’d break from the traditional cosplay article, and instead, do an article that focused on the characters, its creation, and the photographers work and skills. So join me over the next three weeks as I chat to Adele (Gothcatgirl’s Cosplay Adventures) about her various cosplays, and Andrew (Bake by AJ) about the skills he uses to pull the shoots off. Why Cleopatra? For some odd reason, […]

Cosplayer of the month: Batman

Today we speak to Batman’s other alter ego, Douw. Tell us a little bit about yourself: I am Douw Kotze, but I prefer to be called either Daiki/Daniella or Dani. You can find me here www.facebook.com/SilverAngelC What inspired you to cosplay? Well, it kinda goes back to my early childhood where I loved to dress up as Batman and Superman, running around the house and jumping on and off the couches, wanting to be the heroes I’ve grown up with. Later in my life I saw some footage of people dressing up as heroes and characters from so many different […]

To start off, please can you just tell us a bit about yourself? (Who are you? Where do you come from? What are you made of?) Long ago, a wise old sage predicted the coming of a mysterious being -a mighty person born from pure fabulousness, destined to be the saviour of mankind. I am probably not this being. What inspired you to get into Big and Beardy cosplaying? Not much really. I’m big and hairy and I like dressing up but don’t have time or money to be fancy about it. So […]

Valka: Cosplayer of the month

Welcome to our eighth cosplayer of the month interview. Today we speak to Valka, aka Adele. Tell us a little bit about yourself. Grew up in the Free State in a one horse town. Was an avid sci-fi and fantasy reader to escape the mind-numbing flat expanses. Escaped to Jo’burg the first chance I got. I work in online marketing in strategy and implementation.  I’m mother to 6 cats, a rat and a dog named Zeus. I grow veggies and make all kinds of weird jam. I collect classic sci-fi novels, vintage gloves and antique silver rings (and evidently, cats). I’m obsessed with Skyrim, Supernatural, X-Files, and currently, Hannibal. I’m in a long-term monogamous relationship with Luke, my Xbox. What inspired […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 4, aka There was a food fight!

We wander around the venue for an hour or so, getting to grips with the locals, the “normals”, the unique shops, their deliciously naughty products and their diverse myriad of owners. Soon we have sampled a plethora of tasty items. We’ve explored everything from comic books to home made armour. We have been met by, and greeted with love, a legion of Andy. (See what I did there Rebellion Boys fans?) In the distance a horde is massing in front of a large bouncy bag, as a queue of loons is led around a corner, raised high above it on a magnificent steel structure -all shiny and sexual- and the flung from it with a fury or screaming hair and wobbly […]

Today we speak to Black Canary. What inspired you to become a cosplayer? I don’t know actually. I guess I saw people doing it and thought it looked fun. Nothing much deeper behind the story there. What inspires your style as a cosplayer? (Anime, Star Wars, Gaming?) Originally it was anime, but over the years I’ve grown out of it, so now it’s a mixture of Western pop culture (games, comics, cartoons). Which three characters would you like to cosplay? Pearl (Steven Universe), the new protagonist of Dishonored (don’t […]
