Sci-Fi Con

Well, well, well, we’re almost there, almost at Sci-Fi Con. (14 November. Nine days left and counting). It’s been a few months coming. A few months in the making. And a few months of additional stress, and excited off the wall Jedi-Style bouncing. Soon the great day will be upon us; and we will all be thrown into the world of delicious geekiness and combined nerdiness. All taking place at the surreal looking Midrand English Primary School. (10.00 to 4.30) We have a fantastic day planned. Roeks Beer

Today we speak to one of South Africa’s best brew masters about his fantastic beery creations. So what’s the history of Roeks Beer? I would make beer in my hobby brewery and friends and family when visiting would always say Roeks give me a beer, but in my absence they would ask my wife Lauran for a Roeks Beer. So when we started commercially the name ROEKS BEER was the natural choice for a brand name. How long have you been around? I brewed my first concoction when I was 8 years old; commercially we only started production in 2007. What makes your Roeks Beer unique? We do not follow BJCP style guidelines, we do not add funny stuff and […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 5, aka Goodbye for now

And here we are, at the end of an amazing day. It’s just got 11 PM, and Wookiee and I have just finished our last drink at the banquette. (I had a Guinness. He had a coke. Thought you’d like to know.) As I stand here, the cold night air crawling across Hubbard Park, followed closely by a soupy fog, I think back over the amazing day that we have had, and sadly of all the events we have missed. That’s right. Even we have regrets. Even though Geekfest 2015, has been an absolutely thrilling event, and our writers have experienced a number of amazing and fantastic happenings, we couldn’t see everything we wanted to see. There’s a list of […]

Geekfest 2015 – Part 4, aka There was a food fight!

We wander around the venue for an hour or so, getting to grips with the locals, the “normals”, the unique shops, their deliciously naughty products and their diverse myriad of owners. Soon we have sampled a plethora of tasty items. We’ve explored everything from comic books to home made armour. We have been met by, and greeted with love, a legion of Andy. (See what I did there Rebellion Boys fans?) In the distance a horde is massing in front of a large bouncy bag, as a queue of loons is led around a corner, raised high above it on a magnificent steel structure -all shiny and sexual- and the flung from it with a fury or screaming hair and wobbly […]

Haggis

“Thy fowll front had, and he that Bartilmo flaid; The gallowis gaipis eftir thy graceles gruntill, As thow wald for ane haggeis, hungry gled.” — William Dunbar, Flyting of Dunbar and Kennedy. As it is Burns Night, let us take a look at the traditional pudding of the evening; the majestic haggis. So most people have heard of haggis, but what is it actually ? Myth holds the Wild Haggis (Haggis scoticus) is a creature native to the Scottish Highlands. The Wild Haggis’s right and left legs are of different lengths allowing it to run quickly around the steep mountains and hillsides which make up its natural habitat. According to a poll held in 2003, 33% of American visitors to Scotland […]

Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives

I love food. Food is fantastic. It’s one of the few things that unites humanity. No matter where you are from. No matter who your people are. No matter what you like to eat. Food brings us together. Though there is one sort of food I love above all others. And that’s “real” food. Nothing fancy. Nothing pretentious. Nothing snobbish. Just good old fashioned home-style cooking and plenty of it. So obviously the American TV show, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (Triple D) instantly appealed to my love of good food. Starting in 2007 this simple look at all things food in North America has gone on to produce 200+ episodes and well over a dozen seasons each of which is soaked […]

Fry Up Inspector

Today we speak to Britain’s greatest Fry Up Inspector. Why fry ups? Most people enjoy a fry up and the quality can vary depending on where you go. On a daily basis I don’t usually eat breakfast but always have a fry up at the weekend, it seemed like a good opportunity to write about each place I had visited. The best way to do this was to remain anonymous to ensure I was served the same breakfast as everyone else when I visited a cafe. What lured you into the fry up review business? I started the “Fry Up Inspector” blog after loads of people had commented on some fry up photos I had put on my personal Facebook […]

GIRL MEETS BUG!

Silkworm Pancakes. Today we have a bit of a multi-legged treat for you. For today we speak to Daniella Martin, or as she is more widely known, Girl Meets Bug. Now for those of you who are not familiar with her, Daniella is an Insectivore or lover of Entomophagy. (That’s eating invertebrates. Bugs for the layman.) Bugs! Yes, you read that correctly. She is a lover of eating all things bug. Deep-fried crickets. Why invertebrates? They are abundant, sustainable to farm, and nutritious. Your favourite buggy meal? Waxworm tacos. What’s your message to the world? Mostly that not eating insects is an irrational choice we can no longer afford to make. Have you ever been to Africa? No, sadly. (You’d […]

Misfit Munchies.

Well today I decided to try something different. Today, we do our first sit down interview. Now I know that there are a number of games companies, comic-shops, and toy merchants available – but I’ve decided to go one better. TODAY WE LOOK AT CAKE!  And where better to start and discuss cakes then with a new and upcoming dessert shop? And not just ANY dessert shop, but one run by geeks. A GEEK CAKE PRODUCTION FACILITY! And I, your peaceful sugar-high overlord, was lucky enough to be at the lunch party for such an establishment. MISFIT MUNCHIES For the benefit of my readers, I’ve skipped the gay banter and blue waffles (They had soap in them), and have skipped […]
