72 hours and already into live music

I have now been upon England’s green and asphalt covered land for a little over 72 hours. It’s wonderful to be home. (Dover. South-East England to be exact. -Ed) Before me stands a glorious countryside, magnificent cliffs, and a myriad of historic buildings; and within each of these locales a million adventures await to be lived. It’s a fantastic thing to stand in the centre of a small town knowing that there is a plethora of unique and interesting entertainments available within walking distance. Case in point, on Sunday night -while the sun was still up at 9pm- I indulged in a little sojourn at one of the local pubs. (Local pubs! What a statement! We have no pubs in […]

Blue Man Group

So here I am sitting at home, my head still pounding and my eyes still spinning -it’s all rods and cones, baby. What a night that was. Good Lord! It was absolutely fantastic. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it was legendary. What caused this legendary evening? Well, it’s simply the amazing meal that I had at Monte Casino. No, I lie. It was watching Wookiee play ten-pin bowling with a buggered hand. No. I am lying again. It was, in fact, the show put on by the gloriously entertaining Blue Man Group; who are at present playing across South Africa. (Go see them!) Now I wanted to give you a well written and well thought out […]

A Night with Iron Maiden

And now that the dust has settled -and I have recovered from both a cold and a series of exams- it is time to reflect upon the grand spectacle that has thus far been one of the best nights of my life. (No, we did not sleep together -Ed) It is not often one gets to simply knock a major item off their top bucket list; but recently I did just that. Dreams do come true, and your faithful Wookiee has seen Iron Maiden Live. Years in the making, this is the tale of the greatest of adventures. My love of Iron Maiden started in my early years of high school when a friend lent me his Brave New World […]

rAge Is In All of Us

“That’s how it starts. The fever, the rage. The feeling of powerlessness- that turns good men….cruel” – Alfred pennyworth Those are the immortal words uttered by Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler to describe the symptoms exhibited by individuals that have the rAge and are unable to go to The Dome . It is a condition caused by a symbiotie that turns its host into a rAge zombie whose sole purpose is to go to the Dome in Randburg where they revel in all the entertainment on offer there. First discovered in 2002, the rAge symbiote has infected more and more individuals with each successive year bringing its hosts together from all around South Africa. Although it might seem as though it […]

Has rAge Outgrown Itself ?

rAge is the premier event on the Johannesburg nerd scene, and has been a staple event for tech heads since the early days of my childhood. Initially a purely computer convention, featuring new technology and games that were on the way, it has grown over the years to include so much more. From comic books to cosplay, figurines to geek apparel, rAge truly has come to be the proverbial Mecca of the South African geek and nerd community. But has its grown too much ? Now before you all crucify me, let me clarify my point. I have been sitting here looking through the various posts from rAge, as one usually does after such events. I’ve been going through the […]

Metal Magic at Krank’d Up

This past weekend saw the 4th iteration of the ever growing Music Festival Krank’d Up at Sundowner’s Pub in Alberton. Set across a masterfully assembled outdoor main stage and a second indoor stage, the show was a glorious, sun scorching day and starry night filled with incredible live acts from both international talent as well as some of the best local metal on offer. The main shows were done by 36 Crazyfists, an alternative metal band formed in Anchorage Alaska and Monuments, a British Progressive metal band. Both bands were brought over specifically for Krank’d up and did the metal genre proud with their sets. [youtube id=”uVXSXr8to9k” width=”600″ height=”350″] Supporting Local bands included some great talent, from the whimsically named […]

FUCK THE FACTS: Desire Will Rot

This is an album for the sacricolists of bedlam. From start to finish Fuck The Facts offering slaughters eardrums, combed hair, and spinal columns; leaving the world a bloody and distorted mess of shattered humanity. [youtube id=”uvZySNLqhdM” width=”600″ height=”350″] There is not much I can say about the songs on this, 11 track, album except for this: Run! For the love of God, run! Run for your lives if you are not into aggressive music. For this album will chase you down and assault you in all manner of interesting and disturbing ways. Songs like ‘Prey’ and ‘Circle’ are the very epitome of a demonic free-for-all. Overall ‘Desire Will Rot‘ may be considered an overwhelming album to new metallers, but […]

The Neighbours Magical Medievil Fayre, Now with Authentic Rain

Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the annual Medieval Fayre, hosted by Neighbours. The weekend took off with a mostly welcomed return of the spring rains. Undeterred by all the falling wetness I pushed onward to the adventure. (You and I both know Scotland has two types of weather: Wet and Wetter. Ed) Despite being dreary, drizzling and mud soaked, I was immediately impressed with the turnout at the annual fayre. I surveyed my surroundings, all manner of stalls were there and people buzzed around like bees after mead. After successfully navigating the maze of mud and sludge I came across a series of blacksmiths hammering away, while on the horizon armoured knights were battling away. [youtube id=”vvhQBQpWKH8″ […]
