The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is the third and final in The Witcher RPG Series. Developed by CD Projekt and published by Warner Brothers Interactive. The game boasts some incredible looking graphics that create a true living world to run around in and generally become medieval on whatever happens across your ill-advised path. The game has changed towards the currently favoured open world, non-linear story familiar to most RPG’s these days. While this can be more than a little frustrating (at least I found it boring to the point of attempting to slit my wrists with a mouse cable for entertainment in others of the sort), we can hope that the producers have filled the world with enough distraction […]

Routine.

I love open-world games. I love science-fiction. I love survival-horror games. So you can imagine my joy at discovering the upcoming indie survival-horror game, Routine. Set on the abandoned Moon base, it’s up to the player to discover what sort of fate, horrific or not, befell the occupants of the lunar colony. The game is completely free-roaming and as such the player could find themselves almost anywhere in the vast complex. The games environments have a nice ’80’s B-movie feel to them, with a myriad of “beeps” and “boops” echoing down corridors, and drab rooms and plastic furniture dominating much of the landscape. The whole game feels like a Star Trek episode that went wrong… well wrong. The game was […]

Wolfenstein: The New Order Pre-Review

The Wolfenstein franchise started in 1981, becoming popular in 1992 when ID Software took over the development. Wolfenstein 3D invented the genre of FPS and served as a prototype for DOOM. This will be the first Wolfenstein since 92 not developed by ID software, being developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game however is built on the id Tech 5 propriety engine. Note this in not the first time ID has outsourced development of a game but usually had still overseen development. Wolfenstein: The New Order continues the story of series protagonist William “B.J.” Blazkowicz who is tasked with launching an “impossible” counter-offensive against the Nazi powers that have taken over the world. (Yes, they seem to […]

The Order: 1886.

“I believe that a man is the strongest soldier for daring to die unarmed.” -Mahatma Gandhi. The Order: 1886 – released exclusively for Playstation 4 – is set in an alternate version of London, and revolves around a group of highly skilled “knights” who defend the city from the numerous threats posed by human-animal hybrids. The game features a lot of British mythology, with King Arthur leading The Order of the Round Table. The game was developed by Ready at Dawn (God of War), and shall feature only single-player mod. (Which is a shame, as it would be a great multi-player game. -Ed.) “The first virtue in a soldier is endurance of fatigue; courage is only the second virtue.” -Napoleon Bonaparte.

Great Geek Collective!

Today we speak to Dina Steyn, one of the heads of the Great Geek Collective. Where did you get the name? Finding a name for the Great Geek Collective’s (GGC’s) con was tricky. We asked people to submit names and then had a vote. The funniest suggestion that didn’t make it was “PretCon”. G²C² is short for Great Geek Collective Convention. How long has it been running? G²C² is in its first year. Its forgoer, Upcon (University of Pretoria Convention) was in its late teens. We chose the theme “Phoenix Rising” to symbolise and celebrate the con’s rebirth as G²C². What’s the history of it? Upcon was traditionally hosted by Tuks Krygspel Vereniging (TKV), a Tuks student society. I first […]

Destiny.

Coming to Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, this September, Destiny is set to blow minds and hearts. Set in an open world, this post-apocalyptic mythic-science fiction FPS game revolves around the “Guardians” the last defenders of the scattered and divided human race. They are tasked with investigating and eliminating threats, posed by various creatures and alien factions, to the last human city. The game combines classic FPS style with a splash of MMO, thus giving the player access to various classes, tech trees, skills, upgrades and so much more. The game was developed by Bungie. (Halo, Myth.) and features a lot of Haloesque elements, such as epic weapons and interesting vehicles. Bungie have stated that the […]

Dark Souls 2

The release to the long awaited Dark Souls sequel is just around the corner and I, for one, am looking forward to it with bated breath. The battle dynamic has changed a bit from the original with some new moves thrown in. The new environment you find yourself in also has some added areas which can only be explored with a torch and “Magic Stones” which can be placed in statues scattered throughout the world which will have random effect depending on the area you’re in. The in-game graphics have been upgraded significantly since the release of Dark Souls, and so have the enemies. If you were thinking of killing a monster trapped in a room, forget it. He will […]

Final Fantasy XV.

“Outside the dream world, life can be harsh, even cruel, but it is life.” – Final Fantasy X. Coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the 15th installment of the Final Fantasy series is, by far, the most breath taking and magnificent of the franchise thus far. The story takes place in an ultramodern city state, Lucis, which is surrounded by various Medieval type nations. The reason for Lucis’s superiority? A Cold War fought for powerful crystals, all of which were either lost or claimed by Lucis. Since the end of the war, the world has been at peace… for now. Taking close to eight (8) years to complete this action-adventure-RPG title looks set to dominate the console world. “I’ve […]

Elder Scrolls Online.

“I was born 87 years ago. For 65 years I’ve ruled as Tamriel’s emperor. But for all these years, I’ve never been the ruler of my own dreams. I have seen the gates of Oblivion, beyond which no waking eye may see. Behold, in darkness a doom sweeps the land. This is the 27th of Last Seed, the year of Akatosh, 433. These are the closing days of the 3rd Era…and the final hours of my life.” “Whats this,” I hear you say, “a new Elder Scrolls game? It’s online, even?” To which I would reply: “You bet your lucky gamer ass, sir/lady.” “Ta! Come see me again, or I’ll pluck your eyes out! Hahahaha!” Where to start? The character […]
